Drivers warned to avoid 'quick fix' when clearing windscreens – for vital reason
As the colder months draw in, we're all too familiar with the struggle to keep our windscreens clear.
With ice, condensation and fallen leaves on the horizon, visibility can become a real issue for drivers. However, an expert has issued a warning against a viral hack that's been circulating online, claiming to offer a quick and easy solution to foggy windscreens.
The TikTok trend, which has seen a surge in popularity, involves using a potato to clean a car's windscreen, supposedly aiding in the prevention of fog and improving water resistance. But, before you reach for the spuds, it's important to consider the potential downsides.
Car expert Robert Webster, from My Car Glass, has highlighted why this hack might not be such a great idea after all. While there may be some short-term benefits, they don't last, and the risks outweigh them.

Robert explained: "Potatoes contain starch, which can leave a temporary form of protection on glass that repels water. This makes it a quick fix solution for short term water resistance and will help rainwater to roll off the windscreen without leaving any residue.
"The starch could also potentially reduce fog as the protective layer created prevents moisture from settling on the surface. However, that’s where the benefits stop.
"Starch is known to leave a sticky substance behind, and while this might not be obvious from the get go, it will build up over time, especially when a surface is exposed to direct sunlight, dirt and other pollutants.
"This can result in a windscreen that appears smeared and dirty, which can have a direct impact on visibility and make driving dangerous at nighttime when oncoming headlights could become a hazard. In wet and foggy conditions, the risk is even more dangerous."
He also noted the positive effects of the potato are short-lived. Once the starchy layer wears off, it's likely that fog and condensation issues will return. If the windscreen hasn't been cleaned properly, then these issues can be even more serious.
Instead of providing a solution to the problem, the TikTok hack might actually result in drivers having to clean their windscreen more often. As well as this, if this isn't done correctly, it can even cause damage to the windscreen and wiper blades.
Robert added: "A better solution would be to use specialist products that are designed for windscreen treatment, and have been tested under weather conditions and deemed safe for regular use. This includes anti-fog sprays and cleaning agents with hydrophobic coatings as they are safe for glass, and offer long-term protection without the risk of residue or scratching."
