Drivers have been warned that there will be additional road closures this week as work on a damaged bridge along the A52 continues.

Last weekend, National Highways closed the Queen’s Medical Centre roundabout for bridge repairs. The damage occurred in 2018 after a beam was struck by a lorry carrying an excavator.

National Highways announced on Wednesday (January 29) that the weekend’s work was successful as the remaining section of the damaged bridge beam was removed.

However, there will be further closures this Friday, January 31, to Middleton Boulevard, underneath the QMC roundabout. From 8pm to 8am the following morning, traffic will be diverted up and over the slip roads.

The next weekend closure will take place from 8pm on Friday, February 7, until 6am on Monday, February 10 - which will allow the team to install the new bridge beam. There is a contingency date of the following weekend.

The roads that will be closed include:

  • A52 eastbound from Priory roundabout to QMC roundabout

  • QMC roundabout between the A6514 Middleton Boulevard northbound entry slip road and southbound exit slip road

  • A6514 Middleton Boulevard northbound entry slip road

  • A6514/A52 between the Clifton Boulevard exit and entry slip roads and Middleton Boulevard exit/entry slip roads

Lane one of the northern bridge, between the northbound entry slip road and southbound exit slip road for the A6514 Middleton Boulevard, remains closed 24/7, National Highways has said.

The public body urged drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and follow the signed diversion routes. It also advised people to remember that “closures can change at short notice” and the latest information can be found on the website’s daily closures page.

The QMC bridge fix began in August 2024 and the repairs are expected to be completed by this summer.
