Drivers Warned Of More Floods Amid Heavy Rain

More flooding is expected in northern England as scores of warnings are in place and heavy rain continues to fall.

There have been reports of localised flooding in North and West Yorkshire as well as in Northumberland.

And police in several counties have warned motorists of terrible conditions, with some roads flooded. In Cumbria, people have been told to drive "only if absolutely necessary".

The Environment Agency said further heavy rainfall was expected on Sunday and into Monday after more than 7ins (180mm) fell overnight in some places.

River levels remain extremely high and are continuing to rise in places.

A spokesman said the risk remains highest for Cumbria, parts of Lancashire and western parts of North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

However, severe flood warnings, where there was a danger to life, have been lifted for two Cumbrian towns, Egremont and Kendal, on the fringes of the Lake District.

More than 1,500 properties were thought to have been at risk and emergency refuge centres were set up by local councils.

But just a handful of properties were flooded overnight as rainfall levels were lower than some predicted and the Environment Agency later lifted its highest levels of alert.

There were at least 38 warnings in force, many in north-east England, meaning floods were expected and immediate action was required.

And there were at least another 58 alerts, meaning flooding was possible and people should be prepared.

In Scotland, meanwhile, there were Flood Warnings in Dumfries and Galloway, Borders, Tayside and West Central Scotland and Flood Alerts in six other counties.

England's Environment Agency is closely watching the River Wharfe after it burst its banks at various locations around Ilkley, Otley and Pool.

In Stockton-on-Tees, three people were taken to hospital for checks after a taxi overturned in what police described as "awful driving conditions".
