Drivers who've reached certain age put on 'alert' to surrender licence to DVLA
A mechanic has warned older drivers to give up their driving licence and surrender it to the DVLA. A YouTube star who is a viral content creator has sounded the alarm and put older drivers on alert over giving up their freedoms.
Scotty Kilmer has warned some older drivers - particularly those aged 70, so born in 1955 or earlier - were a “danger” to themselves and others, with those who are “running into things” needing to give up their licence and surrender it to the DVLA amid concerns for their welfare.
Scotty spoke out in one of his popular YouTube videos and said: “He bought it from a little old man. That's why it's got such low mileage and a lot of scratches. The guy's daughter had to finally take the car away from him because he wasn’t able to drive anymore.

“You get to a point where you’ve got to stop driving, I mean. One of those days I'll probably be at that stage and I’ll probably be infuriated but hey. If you’re a danger to yourself and others and you start running into things all the time, it’s time to stop driving.”
In response to the content creator, one viewer typed: "Scotty indicated the older models last longer than newer ones, for many cars. We must love manual transmission that lasts forever." A second said: "My wife and I bought a 2014 Linlcon MKX with 43,000 miles on it in 2020 for $12,500, and we've not had any major issues with it (previous owners topped it off all the time and threw the EVAP code) and ot has the 3.7 DOHC Cyclone V6. It's been her best vehicle and we still have it."
Another said: "I bought a 2001 Porsche that only had 59,000 miles on it. Got a couple of things squared away on it and it runs amazingly well. The engine is almost too powerful because it is a kick in the pants. I only paid 22k for it. I expect to easily get 180,000 miles out of it.
"I change the oil every 3k to 5k. Got a Ford Fusion with over 160,000 miles on it and it still runs great. Also well maintained."
