'Driving' Dog Needs a Helping Hand for Tractor Challenge

A one-year-old Jack Russell who went viral after appearing to show a knack for life behind the wheel while mustering on a Victorian sheep property, needed a helping hand when it came to tackling a tractor.

Cameron Zschech filmed his dog, Lexie, “driving” his truck on the family farm close to the town of Hamilton, and also shared footage of the pooch behind the wheel of the large farm vehicle.

In a May 6 interview with Australian news outlet, ABC, Zschech explained that while out on the land “moving a mob of sheep” one day, he decided to give Lexie her first taste of life behind the wheel.

“I thought now is the time that I could teach the dog to drive,” Zschech said. He added that he followed the same method used by his father when he was teaching him how to drive, by putting the car in “first gear and let it idle along”.

However, when it came time to use the tractor, he said, “I had to secretly do the accelerating with my leg reaching across to the pedal, I had my phone back behind her as far as I could to get the full view without seeing my leg!”

While he said that it’s “unfortunate” that Lexie can’t quite “be unmanned in the tractor”, he added, “maybe one day we will find a way for her to drive it solo.” Credit: Cameron Zschech via Storyful
