Driving Wind and Rain Lash North Carolina as Isaias Makes Landfall

Hurricane Isaias brought powerful winds and driving rain to North Carolina as it made landfall late on August 3, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of customers.

The National Hurricane Center said Isaias reached North Carolina near Ocean Isle Beach around 11:10 pm with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.

The center later downgraded the hurricane to a tropical storm as it headed north.

The storm would pose “a significant risk of life-threatening flash and urban flooding from heavy rainfall … from northern Virginia into upstate New York,” the center said.
