Drone Captures Endangered Right Whales Feeding in Cape Cod Bay

A record 206 endangered North Atlantic right whales – about 40 percent of the global population – were spotted by researchers in Cape Cod Bay off Massachusetts on April 14, according to local reports.

Drone operator Carl Jacobs captured this spectacular footage of a pod of right whales feeding in the bay that day, close to Sesuit Harbor.

Though the whales tend to feed in waters off Massachusetts this time of year, the high numbers are giving researchers hope that their overall numbers are increasing.

However, researchers also expressed sadness and disappointment after a right whale calf was reportedly found dead in the bay on April 13, bringing the number of known North Atlantic right whales down to 523. Credit: Carl R Jacobs (Brewster, MA) via Storyful
