Drone Footage Shows Aftermath of Plane Crash in Downtown Austin Lake

A small plane crashed into Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin, Texas, on Thursday afternoon, June 16.

The game warden pilot, the only person onboard, was able to exit the plane post-landing and swim to a nearby paddleboarder, who helped him get to shore, said EMS officials. They also reported that the pilot was taken to the hospital with “potentially serious injuries.”

This drone footage shows the plane submerged just below the surface. Two boats can be seen circling the wreck, one surrounding it with a floating boom barrier.

The plane “had just come out of routine maintenance, and the pilot was on a test flight when they reported mechanical issues, which forced them to land the plane in Lady Bird Lake,” said Cory Chandler, Deputy Communications Director at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).

The TPWD said that the plane was removed from the lake later that day. Credit: Jay Stephens via Storyful
