Drone Operator Leads Lifeguard to Shark's Position at Australian Beach
A man having a family beach day in Western Australia on January 5 used his drone to guide a lifeguard after he spotted a shark swimming nearby.
David Alphonso told Storyful that he was spending the day at Meelup Beach with his family and decided to go for a walk along the coast. He then sent the drone up, and spotted a bronze whaler shark swimming in the shallows toward the beach, he said.
“It was the Christmas holidays, so the beach was packed with people,” he said.
In the video, which Alphonso shared to his Instagram account Fonzyfotos, the lifeguard can be seen tracking the predator from their Jet Ski, guided by the drone.
“The lifeguard was coming in on the Jet Ski to try and scare the shark away but it wasn’t bothered,” Alphonso told local media.
Perth Now reported that the beach was closed intermittently over two days due to shark sightings. Credit: David Alphonso via Storyful
