Police footage has captured the rescue of a kidnapped five-month-old boy who was abducted from his mother by a drug addict.

James Dempsey, 35, was jailed for 27 months on Thursday for snatching the baby from a property in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.

Cops launched a manhunt after mother Chantelle Forrester found the child missing from his cot on April 3.

A member of the public spotted Dempsey's silver Vauxhall Astra in Solihull later that day and tried to block it using wheelie bins.

But a 30-minute high-speed chase ensued before officers stopped Dempsey, who was high on drugs, and smashed the vehicle's windows.

The child was showered in glass and left with bruising after officers broke their way into the car near Birmingham Airport.

Drug paraphernalia including a crack pipe was also found on the car seat.

While being arrested Dempsey told cops: "I only kept him for a day or two, f**king hell".

Police released footage of the moment officers rescued the baby from the front passenger seat.

Body-worn cameras captured an officer placing the child on a jacket to check he wasn't hurt before wrapping him in a fleece to keep him warm.

The officer can be heard saying: "The baby's here, the baby's here" before carefully lifting him from the vehicle.

The officer then says: "Hi, its OK" before saying "alright monkey" when the toddler starts crying.

Dempsey admitted abducting the child at Birmingham Crown Court and pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence, theft of a mobile phone and taking a car without consent.

Sentencing, Judge Philip Parker QC said: "I've had taken a look at the footage of the chase. It was a dark and raining, you got up to speeds of 70mph.

"You had gone through red lights and at one point were driving on the wrong side of the road.

"You caused the police to force a collision in order to stop you at a roundabout. They were then forced to smash the window of the vehicle of the front passenger side.

"Which had caused the broken glass to fall onto the child. All of this was born of you thinking of yourself.

"You had many, many hours to reflect on what you had done and if it was not for the effect of the drugs you might have gone back to the mother."
