Drunk Chinese woman downs vodka, goes swimming and passes out, wakes up 50 miles downstream

A woman who went swimming after downing two bottles of Chinese vodka passed out in the water - and woke up unhurt nearly 50 miles downstream.

Shen Ailan, 57, had been sitting on the banks of the Yangtze River drinking ‘baijiu’, when she took an ill-advised dip.

After feeling unwell, she went swimming to ‘clear her head’, but passed out and started floating downstream in a semi-conscious state.

Medics who treated her for hypothermia believe that after going into the cold water she had become semi-conscious and her body had acted automatically to keep her head above water as she was swept off downstream in the fast flowing river.

She managed to avoid serious injuries despite passing several stretches of extremely rough rapid water, numerous bridges, and the fact that the river is a major shipping route with powerful container ships - all of which could have meant death if she had hit them.

But it seems she missed out on all the dangers as she travelled from the beach in the city of Huangshi in south-eastern China's Hubei Province all the way to the city of Ruichang in south-eastern China`s Jiangxi Province.

Her ordeal ended when she woke up and started calling for help some 10 hours later, and her cries were heard by Li Chunfu who has a house by the shore and plunged into the water to pull her back towards the shore.

She said: 'I have no idea what happened between going into the water and being pulled out, but I am only grateful that I survived. And I can certainly say won't be going near alcohol again for some time.'
