Police called to a home by a woman worried about her drunken partner were left in fear as he squared up to them and tried to headbutt a female officer. Leicestershire Police were called to Nicholas Blackshaw's home in Costerdale Close, Mowmacre Hill, Leicester, in January this year.

Explaining what happened, prosecutor Vishal Patel told Leicester Magistrates' Court on Thursday (October 17): "Officers received a call from the complainant that her partner was smashing up the house and being verbally abusive and was drunk at the time.

"The defendant was located outside the property and he carried on arguing with the complainant and she asked him to leave the address. The defendant became confrontational towards the officers and began to square up to them."

Mr Patel said Blackshaw swore at the police, telling them: "I'll have you" and calling one of them, who was American, a "Yank". He also swung his head backwards in an attempt to headbutt a female officer as he was put in the back of a police van.

On the journey to a police station he continued to call the male officer a "Yank". Mr Patel added: "The defendant has a history of offences of this kind."

He said the police had "felt distress" during the incident. The court heard Blackshaw had 50 previous offences on his record, including three previous assaults on emergency workers in November 2020, October 2023 and December 2023, and a racially-aggravated abusive behaviour offence from January of this year.

Rashpal Singh, representing Blackshaw, told the magistrates: "The history is always the same - his partner will call the police saying he's assaulting her and then withdraw the complaint. This is within the same pattern - he's lost his temper.

"He has a history of mental illness and now his physical disability. He knew the officer was American - 'Yank' is not a particularly high level. He yanked his head backwards as an attempt to headbutt the other officer but the officer was nowhere near him."

The court heard Blackshaw was not suitable for a curfew because of the domestic violence issue and not suitable for unpaid work because of his heart condition. Instead, the magistrates fined him £300 and ordered him to pay £100 court costs and a £120 victim surcharge.
