Duckie Thot’s Favourite Things

Duckie Thot has been challenging the whitewashed status quo, pushing for diversity and paving the way for aspiring models as she goes.

The Sudan-born, Melbourne-raised beauty first entered the public consciousness appearing on Australia’s Next Top Model in 2013 in which she finished third, but it wasn’t until Thot packed her bags and headed to New York that her career stepped up a notch.

Her big break came from Kanye West - walking the catwalk for his Yeezy SS17 clothing collection. A campaign for Rihanna’s fashion and beauty lines soon followed - and she now counts the latter as a friend and mentor.

Among Thot’s CV you’ll find the 2018 Pirelli calendar where she embodied the titular Alice in an all-black retelling of Alice in Wonderland as well as shoots for Moschino, Balmain, Oscar de la Renta and even a turn on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway.

Most recently, she faces UGG’s debut ready-to-wear clothing campaign donning the cosy collection of elevated essentials that include tracksuits, teddy jackets and their signature fabric, sheepskin in coat form.

We caught up with Thot to find out the items she can’t live without.

What are you up to at the moment?

I’m excited to finally be back in New York after a year of being overseas. I just shot an amazing campaign for UGG in LA, it was great being back on set again. I have a few other projects I’m currently working on, I can’t disclose all but I can say one project is a capsule collection coming out soon!

How would you describe your style and what are your wardrobe staples?

I would describe my style as minimalistic with a touch of sexy, which can also be polished. I do tend to have moments where my style is more effortless and laid back, it’s always one or the other. My style changes with each season, but it’s important to have statement pieces in your wardrobe. I love coats and shoes - they can bring new life to each look. A new coat I added to my closet is the Gertrude Long Teddy Coat from UGG. The season is changing and what a perfect addition.

What are your favorite brands?

Prada, Mugler, Dion Lee, Bottega Veneta, Versace, and Kim Shui just to name a few. I also like to find upcoming brands to wear, that’s a favourite!

Can you talk us through your favorite jewelry pieces?

I have a few statement pieces, a YSL chunky necklace from the 80s is one. I also have another Vivienne Westwood pearl necklace which I adore. Watches are always at the top of my list, they are so eye catching and of course, bracelets. I have a few Cartier ones that I adore. I personally love little jewellery as well, when positioned right, they look incredible together.

Can you walk us through your beauty routine?

  • Simplicity is key. Face tools help me in the mornings, I usually ice them overnight and use them first thing when I wake up. This helps reduce puffiness.

  • Next, I go in with a good cleanser, in addition with a face cleansing brush (I find this helps with a deeper clean)

  • Then comes a face mask, I wouldn’t underestimate this step! I love to use masks from 111 Skin.

  • I also tend to use an under eye cream to reduce any excess puffiness, a thicker cream works best for me.

  • It’s very important to wear SPF daily, I use Bondi Sands from Australia.

  • Lastly, a daily moisturiser. This usually consists of a lighter product on the face.

What’s the one item you can’t live without?

My Bible along with a notebook. I think it’s important to be connected with your spiritual side and that will always require constant work.

What's on your bookshelf right now?

I have a wide range of books which include but my two biggest categories are fashion books, African American & African history. After that comes, poetry, business and self help books, at the moment I’m currently reading Atomic Habits.

What is your self-care ritual?

The best way someone can look after themselves is by having a routine. It consists of early mornings, reading and writing, the gym and spending time outside in nature. I feel more connected with myself when I do these things.
