Duncan James has spoken out in support of former Blue bandmate Lee Ryan's upcoming EastEnders role, saying he's a "very talented boy".

Last month it was announced that Lee would be joining the soap as Woody Woodward, a troubled bad boy set to cause a lot of trouble – and he clearly has the support of one close pal.

Speaking at the TRIC awards earlier in the week, Duncan James, who plays Ryan Knight in Hollyoaks, said Lee will do a "fabulous job" down in Albert Square.

"I think EastEnders will be good for Lee. It's a great opportunity for him," Duncan said (via Daily Star). "Being in a soap is really hard work. The hours are gruelling and it's tough.

"I actually don't think many people realise how tough it is with the working hours and the commitment that comes with it. I think it's really good for him. It will be good discipline."

Lee's last on-screen appearance was in 2014's Celebrity Big Brother, where he was involved in a love triangle with models Casey Batchelor and Jasmine Waltz.

After receiving negative attention from fans, Duncan is hoping this latest role will be Lee's chance to prove himself.

"The last big thing Lee did was Celebrity Big Brother and he was crucified," Duncan added. "This is a nice opportunity for him to come out and do something different.

"It's a chance for him to show he's a very talented boy. He's already doing a great job and he's really enjoying it. He is going to do a fabulous job in EastEnders. I'm very proud of him."

EastEnders airs weeknights on BBC One.
