Black Adam is incoming, though not for a while, according to Dwayne Johnson.

Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment, Dwayne explained that production on the DC movie is likely to start next year.

"The script came in, it's great, we're working on it," Dwayne said. "If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie."

"Marvel is doing such an incredible job of universe building, and DC is doing a great job finding the footing and tone of their movies," he added.

"It's this phenomenal opportunity for us to nail the tone and make sure he's badass. Also we have intrinsic DNA tied to a lot of other properties in DC."

Back in November, Dwayne confirmed reports that the superhero movie will be written by Undateable creator Adam Sztykiel – and said that the character is "in my bones".

"Excited to expand the DC Universe w/ writer Adam Sztykiel (co-wrote @rampagethemovie) and bring this complex & gritty anti-hero to the big screen. This character's in my bones. Ruthless code. #Kneel #BlackAdam," he wrote on Twitter.

Black Adam will introduce the anti-hero to the DC Extended Universe. He was originally supposed to appear in the Shazam! movie but, alas, Black Adam won't be in that film.

Johnson was actually given the choice between the roles of Black Adam and Shazam, and he told Digital Spy why he went for the former.

"I felt ultimately – and this is with all due respect to Shazam and Billy Batson – what made me choose Black Adam is that I inherently just felt Black Adam was more interesting.

"I felt like there were more layers to Black Adam starting out as a slave and then ultimately becoming the anti-hero who we enjoy today."
