Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has spoken to Oprah Winfrey about the death of his father, revealing their relationship was “complicated”.

The actor and former WWE star’s father Wayde Douglas Bowles was also a wrestler, known as Rocky Johnson.

He died of a heart attack on January 15, aged 75. Johnson, 47, said he was raised on “tough love” and his father was “not an ‘I love you guy’.”

The star of Jumanji, also known as The Rock, was speaking to Winfrey in Atlanta as part of her 2020 Vision: Your Life In Focus arena tour.

He said: “The day he died, that night I went to bed, I felt so grateful and moved. Because I realised, ‘Oh wow, I have a new relationship with you. Clean slate. No regrets. No pain. No complications. Just me and you.’”

The actor said his relationship with his father had taught him the importance of being open with his three daughters Simone, 18, Jasmine, four, and Tiana, one.

He said: “My dad loved me with the small capacity with which he was capable of. With my daughters, I want to be as full and as present as I can. I want my daughters to know I love them truly unconditionally.’”

In a tribute to his father online, Johnson wrote: “I love you ... I was the boy sitting in the seats, watching and adoring you, my hero from afar.”
