The Motability Scheme has rolled out an update for people claiming benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ). The Motability Scheme is an organisation that allows disabled people to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair.

It has issued a crucial update this week for people on Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP). The service is available to recipients of Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), and War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS).

CEO of Motability Operations, Andrew Miller, said: "We're working with car manufacturers and our partners with the aim of providing our customers with stand-out value and the scheme is 45% cheaper on average compared to alternative options."

"During this period of rising costs and an unprecedented period of change for the car industry, we're committed to ensuring the sustainability of the scheme so that we can continue to keep our customers connected now and in the long term," he said.

On its website, it explains: "Use your qualifying mobility allowance to lease a brand-new vehicle. We’ll cover your insurance and servicing, and support you with charging. Simply check you’re eligible, find what suits you and book a test drive. Then apply when you’re ready."

You can apply "as long as you receive a qualifying mobility allowance with at least 12 months left. You can check right now. Just answer a few questions." It states: "Different vehicles suit different people, so we’ll help you decide between our vehicle types and any adaptations. We’ll help you make sure you’re making the right choice for you.

"We’ll receive your payments straight from your allowance provider, to make paying simple. So you know, you might need to top this up with an Advance Payment. You can start applying online if it’s a car or a WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle.

"Once you’ve had a test drive and you’ve found a vehicle you like, visit a Motability Scheme dealer and they’ll order it for you."
