People are urged to check their eligibility for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) as the number of individuals claiming DWP disability benefits hits an all-time high. The benefit is designed to assist with the additional costs associated with living with a health condition or illness, with varying amounts based on how your mobility or daily life is impacted.

As of April 2023, over 3.6 million individuals were getting income from disability benefits, with more than a third of those claiming PIP receiving the maximum payment of £737.20 every four weeks. For those considering applying for PIP, an online 'PIP test' could help you find out if you would qualify.

Your award is determined by the points you accumulate, indicating the extent to which your condition affects you. The PIP test provides an estimate of your potential score and how much you would get as a result.

This tool is managed by the independent benefits group, Benefits and Work, so it does not guarantee eligibility for PIP or ADP, nor the amount you may receive from the DWP.

The anonymous PIP self-test comprises questions and the points allocated for each descriptor answer. It will assist you in understanding whether you would accumulate enough points to receive PIP for each component (daily living and mobility), and whether you would qualify for the standard or enhanced rate of each component.

Would I qualify for PIP?

To be eligible for PIP or ADP, you must have a health condition or disability where you:

  • have experienced difficulties with your daily living either/or mobility for 3 months

  • anticipate that these difficulties will continue for at least 12 months from when they started.

If you are affected in any of these tasks due to your condition, you may want to look at applying for PIP:

  • Dressing and undressing

  • Reading and understanding written information

  • Managing your medication

  • Washing, bathing or using the toilet

  • Making decisions about money

  • Engaging and communicating with other people

  • Moving around

  • Planning a journey or following a route

  • Preparing, cooking or eating food

How much is PIP?

Payment rates for PIP range between £28.70 and £184.30 each week, with rates set at a weekly amount, but paid every four weeks. This means you will get between £114.80 and £737.20 each four-week payment period.

Daily living

  • Standard rate: £72.65

  • Enhanced rate: £108.55.
