Dwr Cymru statement on discoloured water after councillor told people not to drink it
Dwr Cymru has responded after a councillor advised people not to drink discoloured water as supplies return to Conwy homes. Vast areas of Conwy county have been without water for days due to a burst mains at Bryn Cowlyd treatment works at Dolgarrog.
The challenging repair was completed on Friday afternoon and running water has started to return to homes. But as the system refills the water coming through taps is often initially discoloured and full of air.
Earlier Conwy cllr Emily Owen put this message on Facebook. She said: "I've had confirmation that water is not drinkable when discoloured. Dwr Cymru Welsh Water will do comms on this."

Dwr Cymru have now responded. They said: "Just to confirm, discoloured water is common after a burst of this nature. If this happens you should run your tap for a few minutes, if this doesn’t work, turn off your tap for 20 minutes and try again.
"We understand it doesn’t look very nice and that you may not choose to use it for things like infant / babies feeds, but it is fully treated and chlorinated and in our experience the water is unlikely to be harmful to health.
"Bottled water stations will remain open until we are confident supplies are restored to normal."
