The 81-year-old culinary queen broke hearts across the country when she announced she was leaving the cooking show after Channel 4 outbid the BBC for the rights, and Linda, 73, is in the running to take over.

A source told The Sun: “Linda is a massive baking fan and is open to the idea.

"Following Mary is a tough act but she’s a huge name and a TV legend in her own right.

"She gets asked to do a lot of things but refuses most, but this is something that has caught her eye.”

A Love Productions source told the publication: “No formal approaches have been made yet.”

Mary recently revealed she will work with Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc on a new show following the trio’s decision to bow out of Bake Off.

She said: “We will do something because we’re good pals, and who knows what it would be? We haven’t been approached yet, but we would love to do something together. I love their humour.”

While the threesome are yet to sign up to their next project, it’s believed bosses at the BBC are hoping to get them on board their forthcoming culinary programme, which has the working title The Big Family Cooking Challenge, for the beginning of 2017.

Mary announced she was leaving her judging role behind after she found out that the Bake Off was moving across to Channel 4 after they bought the rights in a deal worth an estimated £75 million.

Mary said: “It was a gut feeling. It was gut feeling and I made it straight away to myself, having discussed it with my family and others. I’m really happy I’ve stayed with the BBC. Everything I’ve ever done really has been with the BBC and I wanted to be with them.”

However, Mary’s co-judge Paul Hollywood decided to follow the show over to Channel 4, signing a three-year deal with the channel.
