Car Free Day: From e-bikes to e-skates, these are the cool micro-transport products on the market right now

Micro-transport is the transport revolution that everyone is talking about. Not only is it ridiculously fun but it helps keep city air clean too.

From superpowered skates, to e-bikes and battery-boosted surfboards, here’s our selection to get you moving.

Boardman ADV 8.9E electric bike

image

Electric bikes give you a boost when you need it, including getting up steep hills and saving your legs on longer rides.

This one uses a 250W motor to smoothly add power up to 15mph, lasting more than 50 miles on a charge. The battery is removable so you don’t have to plug your actual bike in, and the app offers GPS navigation, speed, battery power and post-ride data.

£2,499, Halfords.com

Segway Drift W1

These e-skates work in much the same way as the original Segway: you put one foot on each, then angle yourself in the direction you want to go (more intuitive than it sounds).

Lightweight and water-resistant, they’re handy for taking to work, with a maximum speed of about 7mph.

Jyroball

Looking like a Goth version of the Golden Snitch from Harry Potter, the Jyroball is somewhere between a hoverboard and a unicycle.

Created by Ireland-based Moby Micro Mobility, it’s currently crowdfunding but promises a top speed of more than 12mph, with a 14-mile range.

Around £700 after launch, Jyroball.com

With a top speed of 30 knots (about 34mph), it lasts about 40 minutes on a charge. The battery is removable for easy swapping, with a LED indicator so you don’t get stranded.

The board automatically turns off if it flips over, and has a magnetic power key so it can’t fly off without you. The mobile app includes kids, sport, eco and extreme modes.

£25,000 (made to order), Selfridges.com

Hoverboard Vanguard

OK, it can’t actually hover, but the brightly coloured Vanguard is great fun in every other way. It includes 6.5-inch wheels, a Samsung battery with two hours’ use per charge, a 7mph top speed, colour-changing LED lights and Bluetooth speaker capability so you can take your tunes with you.

For an extra tenner, you can also get a bundle with a go-kart seat that fits over the board.
