Ruth Langsford opened This Morning solo on Friday after Eamonn Holmes woke up unable to speak.

Falling foul to the winter illnesses sweeping the nation, Langsford told viewers that her co-host husband had lost his voice and wasn’t able to come to work.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star opened the show saying: “Jack was off all week with the lergy, and this morning Eamonn woke up with no voice. He was literally having to write notes.”

Fortunately, help in the form of Alison Hammond soon rushed in with suitcases in tow and a story to tell.

Perching beside Langsford, the 42-year-old explained: “I woke up, was getting my son ready for school, was going to go to the gym as you do and then I get a message from boss saying: 'Al, can you do the show?'

"And I thought about ignoring it and then I thought about Ruth on her own and I couldn't,” the presenter added as she gave her co-host a big hug.

Alison rushed down from Birmingham to fill in and proved a hit with viewers who hailed her humour and energy.
