'Earthing' has been dubbed one of 2020's biggest wellness trends, aiming to reconnect us with nature – but what exactly is it?

Simply put, Earthing (also known as 'grounding') involves heading outside barefoot and letting your skin connect with the earth beneath you. Whether you wriggle your toes in soft sand or take a stroll across a field barefoot, it enables you to reconnect with Mother Nature in the simplest way.

"Just as the sun gives us warmth and vitamin D, the Earth underfoot gives us food and water, a surface to walk, sit, stand, play, and build on, and something you never, ever thought about — an eternal, natural, and gentle energy," explain the experts at Earthing.com.

What are the health benefits of Earthing?

The straightforward act of walking barefoot outside claims to have a plethora of health benefits. According to research conducted by Earthing.com, the fuss-free concept has been scientifically proven to help with insomnia, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases and also reduce levels of anxiety.

Earthing emits a charge of energy, helping to improve both mental and physical health. The experts at Barefoot Healing tell Glamour: "When your bare feet or skin comes into contact with the earth, free electrons are taken up into the body. These electrons could be referred to as nature's biggest antioxidants and help neutralise damaging excess free radicals that can lead to inflammation and disease in the body.

"The Earth is a conductor or free electrons and so are all living things on the planet, including us. The body is composed of mostly water and minerals which, in combination, are excellent conductors of electrons from the Earth, providing there is direct skin contact or some other conductive channel for them to flow through."

Earthing is also believed to help reduce the stresses in your life. As you step away from your desk, take off your shoes and inhale the fresh air, it aims to help you pause for a moment.

Looking to have a go at Earthing yourself? Follow these simple steps to get the best results...

  • Head outside barefoot for at least half an hour. Choose a beautiful scenic area, such as a countryside path or sandy beach.

  • Leave your phone at home and simply enjoy the surroundings you are in. Explore the textures around you by placing your feet in water, feeling the environment or letting your toes touch the soil. You'll soon notice a mood boost and want to do it all again the next day.
