A 3.2 magnitude earthquake has struck the west of England with reports of houses rattling after the tremor.

The tremor was felt in several towns and villages in Somerset after hitting Bridgwater, north east of Taunton, on Thursday night.

Reports submitted to the British Geological Survey said houses rattled and one person "physically felt my bed shake" following the quake at 10.50pm.

Locals took to social media to tell of their confusion, with one saying they thought a lorry had crashed into their home.

"Earthquake felt in Taunton, Somerset tonight, thought something had hit the side of the house, made the windows shake, quite scary," one resident wrote on Twitter.

“We just had an Earthquake here in Somerset. Thought a lorry had hit our house!,” another said.

Another posted: "It was really strong here in North Curry, there was a boom and the house shock, it woke my husband and I."
