East Kilbride residents flee burning flat block as person rushed to hospital

A person has been rushed to hospital after East Kilbride residents were reportedly seen fleeing from a burning flat block.

Emergency services were called to the Calderwood Square area of the town at around 11.51pm on Saturday, January 25, after smoke was seen billowing from a first-floor property.

Dramatic footage, shared with Lanarkshire Live, shows large plumes of thick smoke as police can be seen warning residents and banging on doors in an attempt to get locals to safety.

It is understood that one person was rushed to hospital for treatment after being rescued by firefighters. A window of the property could be seen completely burnt-out once the fire was put out and the area was made safe.

An eye-witness, who filmed the incident, said: "It was just before midnight and we noticed there was smoke coming from one of the flats with a police car with lights on in the square. We drove round the back and the smoke was getting worse.

"The police were knocking all the doors to evacuate everyone. Two fire engines arrived and they managed to put the fire out quite quickly.

"It was really scary to watch."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.51pm on Saturday, January 25, to reports of a dwelling fire on Calderwood Square, East Kilbride.

"Three fire appliances and other resources were mobilised to the scene where firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a first floor flat.

"One casualty was removed from the building and transported to hospital.

“Crews left the scene at 1.38am after ensuring the area was made safe.”

Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were contacted for comment.
