East Lothian firefighters spend 'an hour' cutting wedged lorry from rail bridge

A lorry had to be cut free by firefighters after it became stuck on a railway bridge in East Lothian.

A local resident reported seeing the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at the site for several hours.

They added a firefighter took around 'an hour' to cut the lorry loose.

The incident took place on Newcraighall Road close to the park and ride at around 2.30pm on Thursday November 21.

"They spent about an hour cutting the lorry loose and around two hours here in total," Lee Cassidy said. "They had to cut the back off it to get it out as there was a pole sticking up that became stuck in the bridge.

"The amount of lorry's which scrape through with millimetres to spare is a joke. Just last week I saw a lorry almost get stuck.

"But on this occasion you could hear a scrape and thud. Instead of reversing it looked like they put their foot down thinking the speed would pull the lorry through.

"Alas it did not and superglued him to the bridge."

Scotrail were forced to delay services from Tweedbank and Edinburgh following the incident however the line was later reopened following an inspection.

In images shared with Edinburgh Live, a police cordon was erected to stop pedestrians from walking under the bridge.

A fire engine could be seen behind a firefighter who appeared to be holding a tool as he tried to free the lorry.
