East Lothian locals have been left gutted after a pub announced their sudden closure.

The new Prestoungrange Gothenburg, or The Goth, was taken over by new owners two years ago. They've now said January 31 will be their last day of trading, saying goodbye with a karaoke night.

The team thanked family, friends and customers for their support. Locals said the boozer always had a 'great atmosphere'.

Former owners stepped down from The Goth back in 2022, amid 'spiralling costs'. Michelle McLellan and Calum Wilson saw their bills rise to £8000 a month, which was the final straw.

It's unclear if there is a plan in place for the future of The Goth. The pub was established more than 110 years ago, in hopes of ecnouraging miners and brickworkers to drink less and enjoy non-alcoholic drinks and food.

Posting to Facebook, current owners of The Goth said: "We have made the tough decision to stop trading at the Goth, and today will be our last day.

" Anyone who has gift vouchers etc can still use these at our other business - The Linton down in East Linton. We will still be doing outside catering, take aways etc from the Linton, so please get in touch.

"Thanks again, and looking forward to seeing everyone tonight."

One local resident commented: "I’m so sorry to hear this. It’s a very hard trade now and people don’t understand the costs of everything in that building.
