Passengers at East Midlands Airport were left without their luggage due to a "baggage system fault". The issue hit 17 flights, with the missing luggage tally ranging from one to 168 bags.

The malfunctions at the Castle Donington airport disrupted flights on Sunday, September 15. An airport spokesperson said that seven Jet2, five Tui and five Ryanair flights suffered delays.

According to the spokesperson, travellers should expect to be reunited with their baggage within the ensuing 24 hours. Destinations like Girona, Alicante, Arrecife, Faro, Enfidha, Palma, Benidorm, Dubrovnik, Lanzarote, Skiathos, Dalaman, Malaga, Luga and Krakow felt the sting of this disruption, , reports Leicestershire Live.

Simon Hinchley, Operations Director at East Midlands Airport, said "Unfortunately we experienced a baggage system fault yesterday morning which affected 17 departing flights. This caused some delays, and some flights had to leave without passenger luggage on board."

"We have been working with airlines yesterday and today (Monday, September 16) to resolve this, and expect people to be reunited with their baggage within the next 24 hours many should be by later this evening. Our baggage system is back up and running and flights have departed as normal today."

"Anyone affected by yesterday's issue is encouraged to contact their airline in the first instance if they are experiencing ongoing difficulties. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience yesterday's problems caused."
