EastEnders to air emotional new Lola and Jay scenes

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders couple Lola Pearce-Brown and Jay Brown face an emotional start to married life in next week's episodes.

The pair took centre stage in a moving wedding episode this week as they tied the knot in front of their family and friends.

Lola has been told that she's terminally ill after being diagnosed with a brain tumour last year. As Lola and Jay became reflective after their big day, they were both painfully aware that there were no guarantees over how long they'd have together.

Next week, Lola becomes concerned for her young daughter Lexi, who pretends to be unwell just to stay off school.

Lexi's dad Ben Mitchell takes her in for lessons as normal, but soon receives a call to pick her up again.

Caring Lexi admits that she wants to be with Lola 24/7 until she gets better.

Jay desperately tries to cheer Lola up with talk of a honeymoon, but she remains firmly focused on Lexi. Lola decides that it's time to be honest with Lexi by telling her that she's dying.

As Lola braces herself to share the tragic truth, Jay and Ben both show their support by staying close by.

The news hits Lexi hard, but although everyone expects her to cry, she instead seems angry with her loved ones for lying to her for so long.

Lexi demands to be taken back to school, where Lola's estranged mum Emma Harding watches her from afar. What is Emma up to?

Jamie Borthwick, who plays Jay, recently praised co-star Danielle Harold for her performances as Lola in this storyline.

He told BBC One's The One Show: "Danielle, I have to say, has been absolutely fantastic while we've been filming this stuff because it's really gruelling. You're going into work crying all day every day and it can take its toll, but she's been absolutely fantastic.

"I think it's raised awareness about this, which, I think if you touch one person, if you do it for one person or one family that's good enough, but it feels like we're really making a mark with this storyline."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
