EastEnders aired heartbreaking scenes tonight (October 20) as Jane Beale reluctantly went through with her plan to leave Walford, much to viewers' surprise.

Fans have been left on tenterhooks over what Jane (Laurie Brett) would ultimately decide to do following Max Branning's cruel demands that she leave the Square without Ian.

Max has been desperate to get Jane out of the picture ever since she learned the awful truth about his schemes and threatened to expose him to everyone.

However, with ruthless villain James Willmott-Brown insisting that Ian will eventually be useful in their revenge plot, it was down to Max to force Jane to cut all ties with her husband.

Sadly, Jane was unable to find a way to tell Ian what was really going on in tonight's episode, with Max watching her every move.

Despite some harsh words from a furious Kathy, and some heartfelt ones from Ian, Jane said a tearful goodbye to her friends and family, before departing Walford in sad scenes.

Once safely in the taxi, Jane did attempt to make contact with Ian to fill him in on the real reason for her shock departure – leaving him a desperate voicemail saying she still loved him and not to trust anyone.

The outcome of Jane's fate had been kept under wraps until transmission, but viewers will have to keep watching to see if that is the end of the story. Has Jane really gone for good?
