Ben Mitchell perhaps reached the point of no return in EastEnders on Tuesday (May 21) when he plotted to kill one of his own family members.

The character has caused huge controversy among EastEnders fans since Max Bowden recently took over the role, as we've seen Ben get involved in human trafficking, allow his own half-sister Louise's kidnapping and plot to bankrupt his father Phil.

This week, his plotting against Phil has come dangerously close to being exposed after his co-conspirator Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) drunkenly confessed everything to Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick).

In Tuesday's instalment, a panicked Lola tried to convince Billy that her confession was just drunken rambling and nothing more.

"He would never do anything to us, or Phil," she said. "I'm sorry I worried you. Just forget it."

But Billy's suspicion was twigged when Phil called him over to pay him and cut him off from all future family's business dealings. This prompted Billy to consider telling his cousin the truth, especially after some encouragement from Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White).

At the same time, Ben was busy trying to get Lola back on side by convincing her that all of his plotting and scheming was all to secure a better future for their family.

"If it all goes south, I won't be the only one in dad's firing line," he warned.

His argument seemed to work, but everything soon blew up in his face when Billy revealed the truth about Ben's scam to a hugely conflicted Phil. After Ben denied everything, Phil was left unsure of which family member to believe.

"Just tell me what you're playing at?" Phil demanded. "I know about the cars. So what else are you doing behind my back?"

"Nothing," Ben insisted. "We should be ruling this Square. Think about it! The Mitchells back on top."

"Nah," Phil shot at him. "The Mitchells? Yeah. But not you! Billy! He's family, he's loyal and he's got the bottle to say what's what."

Following that bombshell, a desperate Ben then tried and failed to get Billy back on his side. His relative was having none of it and instead warned Ben to never get Lola involved in his plotting again… or else.

"I know this much, I have Phil's back," Billy also told him.

That's a threat Billy could soon regret because the cliffhanger for Tuesday's episode featured Ben making plans to get rid of his relative once and for all by meeting with a hitman!

Will Ben really go through with killing his relative in order to carry out his vendetta against Phil?

EastEnders continues on Thursday (May 23) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
