EastEnders' Bernadette faces surrogacy setback

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Bernadette Taylor has received devastating news about her plans to become a surrogate for the Highways.

Bernie recently made the decision to carry a child for Rainie and Stuart as a way to earn desperately-needed extra cash for her family in their time of need.

In Monday's (May 17) instalment, Bernie finally opened up to new love interest Molly about her plans as well as confessing she hadn't yet told mum Karen.

Molly questioned whether it was fair to make such a big decision without letting Karen know, then put Bernie in a difficult position by asking her not to pursue the surrogacy if she wanted to continue their relationship.

"Do you really think this won't change things?" Molly asked her. "I like what we have. I just want a normal girlfriend. Is that so weird? Forget about it, Bern. For us."

While the Taylor-Baker family got some amazing news when Bailey was found by Denise Fox and brought back to the Square, Bernie's personal excitement didn't last too long.

Bernie was steadfast in moving ahead with the surrogacy, telling Molly that their relationship might be "wrong" if she couldn't support her plan to help the family.

When Bernie went to tell Rainie she was about to start a new diet, Rainie tried to let her down gently by explaining the "risks were too great" because of Bernie's prior medical miscarriage.

"Me and Stuart are getting another surrogate, I'm so sorry," Rainie explained.

Rainie left Bernadette to process the heartbreaking news as Monday's episode ended.
