The boss of EastEnders has spoken about why he decided to kill off Ronnie and Roxy in that hard-hitting New Year storyline.

The Mitchell sisters were two of numerous characters to exit the soap following the return of Sean O'Connor as executive producer, but none of the others met such a grisly end.

Explaining why he chose to have Ronnie and Roxy drown in a hotel swimming pool on Ronnie's wedding day, he told the Royal Television Society: "[Ronnie and Roxie] were not the sort of characters that would leave in the back of a taxi.

"We wanted to give them an operatic ending."

O'Connor also discussed Walford's return to its roots, tackling issues at the heart of London communities with storylines such as Martin's market-trading boycott and Denise's mission to improve the local community.

"I'm interested in the idea of community in a world that is quite fractured at the moment, " he said.

"Whether that be [by] Brexit or Trump… I think the idea of community is being questioned, maybe even threatened, and all soaps are about community.

"[EastEnders] is not realistic, it's always been a fantasy, a fiction of what community is, but in that fantasy or fiction there is a deeper truth, and it's to do with the robustness of the format."

EastEnders next airs on BBC One at 7.30pm on Thursday, March 23.
