EastEnders fans could see some big changes in the show over the coming months, with rumours suggesting that John Yorke already has exciting plans to turn things around.

It was confirmed on Friday that Sean O'Connor will be standing down as producer with immediate effect – being replaced on a temporary basis by John Yorke.

Yorke worked as a script editor on EastEnders in the 1990s, and later took creative control as executive producer from 2000 until 2003.

Although it's early days at the moment, The Sun is claiming that Yorke has plans to ensure Danny Dyer is given a new deal to keep him on at The Vic as Mick Carter.

The reports also suggest that the temporary boss is planning to put Steve McFadden's character Phil Mitchell back at the forefront of the show, as well as bringing back Kat and Alfie Moon now their spin-off series Redwater has come to an end (on a dramatic cliffhanger, no less).

O'Connor took over the reigns of EastEnders last summer as a replacement for Dominic Treadwell-Collins, but is leaving to work on the film project Handsome Brute with Doctor Who and Sherlock's Mark Gatiss.

EastEnders continues tonight (June 26) at 8pm on BBC One.
