EastEnders has brought back Cora Cross to deliver an upsetting new setback for Max Branning.

Ann Mitchell made another guest return as Cora in Monday night's episode (November 11), thwarting Max's hopes of being reunited with his young son Oscar.

After spending a year consumed with his desperate desire for revenge against Albert Square, Max was given a much-needed distraction when Jack arranged for Oscar to visit for his birthday.

Max's daughter Abi even gave him help with making a cake for the youngster, leaving him with fresh hope that he could get his family life back on track.

Sadly for Max, Denise Fox had other ideas when she heard about Oscar's visit – making a secret phone call to Cora to tip her off about recent events in Walford.

Just when Oscar was due to arrive, Cora turned up instead and revealed that Tanya now knew all about Max's turn to the dark side.

This meant that Oscar wasn't coming after all and Cora took great delight in telling Max that he'd never see his son again.

Spoilers for future EastEnders episodes have revealed that Max will be driven to the edge over Christmas – even plotting to kill Ian Beale and Phil Mitchell as tensions rise.

By contrast, Max seemed genuinely happy to be building bridges with his family tonight, with revenge far from his mind for once. So, have Cora and Denise now inadvertently made matters much worse by snatching away Max's chance at redemption?

EastEnders continues on Tuesday (December 12) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
