EastEnders aired a surprise return for Lisa Fowler tonight (June 21) as she turned up to support her daughter Louise following a horror incident at the prom.

Reports had suggested that Lisa would be back in the aftermath of Louise's accident – but her reappearance wasn't officially confirmed until transmission.

Louise (Tilly Keeper) has been left in a devastating condition after her prom dress went up in flames when she was pushed into a row of candles by bully Alexandra D'Costa.

Although the extent of her injuries is still unclear, the teenager is now facing the prospect of having life-changing burns and had to have an emergency operation at hospital.

As Sharon remained unsure over whether to contact Phil – who has been recuperating abroad since January – it was her mum who Louise called out for when she woke up disorientated after surgery.

While Sharon blamed herself for allowing her stepdaughter to wear a market-bought prom dress, concerns continued to grow for a terrified Louise when she insisted that she didn't want to see her boyfriend Travis – or anyone else – in her current state.

But just when it looked like the schoolgirl really had hit rock bottom, she was greeted with the unexpected arrival of Lisa in the closing moments of the episode.

We can confirm that Lucy Benjamin has reprised her role as Lisa for a brief stint, meaning fans can expect to see huge fireworks when she comes face to face with her ex-flame Phil next week.

After removing herself from Louise's life for so long, it's safe to say Lisa's reception won't be all that welcoming, but will she be able to give her daughter the support she needs?

Lisa originally departed Walford in 2002, returning briefly the following year to reclaim custody of Louise. She was last seen when she made a one-off appearance to meet Peggy back in 2010.

The character has been at the heart of some of the show's most memorable storylines including her volatile relationship with Phil Mitchell, which led to the iconic 'Who Shot Phil?' whodunit.

Discussing her return to EastEnders, Lucy said: "It was great to be back at EastEnders as it has been such a long time since I had been there. I loved being back in Elstree for the few weeks I was there, seeing old friends again and working with really talented people. I loved every minute of it."

EastEnders continues on Monday, July 24 at 8pm on BBC One.
