The week of the 13-17 September 2021 is a high-profile one for EastEnders, with an explosion at the Mitchells’ leaving the lives of several characters hanging in the balance.
So, let’s break down who’s involved, while also taking a look at the dramas happening elsewhere in the Square.
Janine, Tommy and Scarlett face danger
As was revealed at the close of last week’s episodes, fabric that was too close to the hob in the Mitchells’ kitchen has caught alight, and now Janine and Scarlett are with Tommy in his bedroom.

Not realising that a fire has started, Tommy will be seen locking the door and tossing the key down a crack in the floorboards. But once the trio start to feel the heat from the blaze, they’ll be seen desperately trying to escape, only for an explosion to then rip through the building.
An unconscious Phil is in big trouble
With Shirley having attacked Phil, we’ll next see the Mitchell patriarch lying knocked out with flames licking around him.
Phil is set to wake up struggling to breathe, just at the moment when Ben and Callum notice the flames and try to edge closer to him. But the fire is now engulfing the house and getting perilously close to a gas canister. So will they be the ones facing the full force of the blast?
Kheerat and Gray try to help – but end up at risk
Two people you might not have expected to be caught up in the crisis are Kheerat and Gray but the pair are destined to be key players in the action.
Monday’s episode will mark the one-year anniversary of Chantelle’s death, but when Gray wakes to flowers on his doorstep, he realises that it’s Kheerat who left them there. But as the two guys square off, they notice the fire at Phil’s house and enter the property.
However, as Kheerat bravely starts to climb the stairs and stage a rescue – KABOOM!
Jean is arrested – and Stacey returns
Away from the stunt, we have Walford’s accidental marijuana magnate Jean Slater getting arrested for a possible drug offence, only to then collapse while being questioned about the weed in her garage.
And, back on the Square, Martin is set to get suspicious about Ruby’s part in the drugs bust when he notices a text on her phone from the police thanking her for the help she’s given.
Realising the extent of Ruby’s deceit, Martin ends up visiting Stacey in prison and revealing all. A furious Stacey makes her feelings on the matter plain: either Martin sorts Ruby out or she’ll kill her.
Jean, meanwhile, recovers from her collapse and, by Thursday, is being coaxed by investigators to name her co-conspirators. But whose name will she give?
Linda goes into labour
The paternity secret that the Carters are trying to keep to themselves is in danger of being divulged after Queen Vic landlady Linda goes into labour.
As she starts experiencing contractions, Jack asks her again if Max is the father. Linda denies it, but when her waters then break, there’s no guarantee that she’ll be able to keep schtum in this moment of high stress.
Dotty and Tiffany slug it out
As if all of the above wasn’t enough, there’s also the prospect of Tiffany and Dotty coming to blows at a boxercise class.
It’s left to Nancy and Sonia to try and split them up, but the latter is more than a little distracted by a guy called Ethan, who’s attending the same class at the gym. As the two of them head off on a date, Sonia’s dad Rocky can’t help but be suspicious about the new man in his daughter’s life.
