Eagle-eyed Eastenders viewers were left scratching their heads last night as they watched a scene about the general election.

Kathy Beale and Jane Beale were discussing the election, and soap bosses were obviously keen to reflect such a big real life event and put a positive message forward by encouraging viewers to vote.

In the living room of the Beale residence, Jane said: “No idea when I’m going to find the time to vote.”

She added: “But you’ve got to though, don’t you? It is important. Especially this time.

“So, which way you going to swing?”

To which Kathy replied: “My way. The same way I voted last time.”

Loyal fans of the BBC One soap will know that during the last General Election in 2015, Kathy was supposedly ‘dead’ but was, in fact, ‘out of the country’.

One said: “Wasn’t Kathy in South Africa with Gavin last election? How did she vote while she was on the run #EastEnders.”

Another added: “How did Kathy vote in 2015 when she was ‘dead’ and out of the country?”

A third said: “Did Kathy vote last time?! Wasn’t she dead?”

However, others praised the soap for tackling the issues.

“I love that EastEnders always does topical, no other soap has mentioned the election #EastEnders @bbceastenders,” said another.

EastEnders continues on BBC One at 8pm.
