EastEnders fans have been left fearing for Martin Fowler's life as the BBC soap prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Fruit and veg trader Martin (James Bye) is the youngest child of legendary couple Pauline (Wendy Richard) and Arthur Fowler (Bill Treacher). The character was born in 1985, months after the first episodes debuted on TV screens.

During the first episode, which aired in February 1985, Pauline discussed her pregnancy with Dr Legg (Leonard Fenton). Martin has since become a jewel in Walford's crown and has recently taken centre stage in various storylines.

He recently donated his liver to his young son Roman after the pair reunited last year when Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) returned to Walford. This week, Martin was left devastated when his stall was shut down, leaving him with a lack of self-worth.

This also sparked talk of the Fowler family legacy in Albert Square. He's also been caught up between his ex-wives Ruby and Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), as they both crave his attention.

When Martin was in The Albert, Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton) and Stacey did a round of shots known as ‘Death Throes’ while holding a duck he’d won at the arcades.

Fans have suggested that this could be a subtle hint at him becoming a ‘sitting duck’ – an obvious and easy target for an enemy to shoot or attack. The theory comes after Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) demanded a gun from Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) as she continues to fear for her life after her attack.

Taking to X, one person wrote: "Everyone cheers-ing Martin with shots that have the word 'death' in their name doesn't fill me with confidence for his anniversary-based safety, btw #eastenders."

A second stated: "Martin is warmed by a reminder of his past… 1 week before the anniversary, I’m telling you I’m convinced he’s dying. #EastEnders."

A third chimed in: "They're setting up Martin to be killed off for the 40th anniversary, aren't they?"

"Gonna need EE fans to stop suggesting that Martin will die for the 40th. Please don’t speak this into existence #EastEnders", urged another. (sic)
