EastEnders aired harrowing scenes in the second half of its double bill tonight as Jack Branning learned the truth about what killed the Mitchell sisters.

A month after both sisters died tragically in a swimming pool, a reluctant Jack (Scott Maslen) attended the official inquest where the events leading up to Ronnie and her sister Roxy's drowning were finally explained.

He sat stone-faced and silent in agony as the coroner confirmed that Roxy did have cocaine in her system at the time of death, although not enough to cause her cardiac arrest.

Instead, the medical examiner determined that the cold water in the pool was likely enough physical trauma to trigger the heart trouble.

Jack at first tried to keep his composure, but ultimately exploded at mother-in-law Glenda Mitchell (Glynis Barber) back at home when he found out that she'd taken Amy to have her ears pierced without asking him.

"Get out," Jack ordered. "I made the mistake of letting Roxy into our lives, of giving her the benefit. Do you think I'm going to make the same mistake twice?"

"I'm her grandmother. I just want to help. I want to be here," Glenda frantically tried to explain.

He barked back: "You're a liar! You're a snake! Weaseling your way in here, just like Roxy did! Pulling at Ron's heartstrings - and I let her! I didn't put my foot down. I don't want you anywhere near my kids, do you hear me? Get out… NOW!"

A heartbroken Glenda had no choice but to leave her granddaughter behind as Max Branning (Jake Wood) stood by watching without interjecting.

Of course, viewers know that the devious Max secretly disposed of Roxy's drugs the morning after her death, just before police could sweep her hotel room.

In the first half of Thursday's double bill, Aunt Babe (Annette Badland) was finally kicked out of the Queen Vic by Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) once and for all because of her betrayal earlier in the week.

EastEnders continues on Friday (February 10) at 8pm on BBC One.
