EastEnders fans have been left wondering how Mick Carter will temporarily bow out from Walford after he escaped a prison sentence in a surprise twist.

Mick has spent the past couple of weeks preparing himself for a stint in jail, as he was unable to pay the fine he'd received over Aunt Babe's boozy breakfasts at the Queen Vic.

As everyone knows Danny Dyer is currently on a break from EastEnders, fans naturally assumed that a shock prison twist would be used to explain his popular character's absence.

Some tabloid reports even wrongly stated that Mick would definitely be going to jail, but the truth was revealed in last night's EastEnders double bill when his mother Shirley took the blame for everything instead.

Poor Shirley assumed she was just getting a six-week sentence, but she was ultimately given three months behind bars after she was also charged with perverting the course of justice.

With Mick escaping trouble, the big question now is how he will leave if he's not off to prison.

Could it be as simple as Mick going off to join his wife Linda, who's spent the past couple of months caring for her unwell mum Elaine?

Alternatively, could his exit tie in with the ongoing problems at the Queen Vic or Max Branning's revenge? The Carters are distraught to find yet another leak in the ceiling next week, which could push Mick over the edge!

Only time will tell what's going on, but one thing's for sure - Whitney and Johnny will definitely have their hands full looking after the pub with the rest of the family gone...

Danny Dyer has been on a short break from EastEnders since last month and hasn't yet returned to filming, but a show insider recently told Digital Spy that he'd be coming back "in weeks rather than months".

An EastEnders spokesperson also previously said: "Danny is on a short break from EastEnders. This was not enforced by bosses, nor has he quit the show."

EastEnders continues on Tuesday (March 14) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
