EastEnders Jaqueline Jossa clarifies 'self-harm' comment after British Soap Awards criticism

EastEnders actress Jacqueline Jossa has spoken out to clarify her comments about self-harming at this year’s British Soap Awards.

The actress, 25, claims her words were ‘taken out of context’ after she was heard talking to former fellow co-star Lacey Turner when Hollyoaks won the award for Best Storyline that involved their recent story of self-harm starring Lauren McQueen.

As the winner was announced, viewers (thought they) heard Jossa say ‘I think they all self-harm on that show’, which seemed to go unnoticed by those in attendance but didn’t evade the ears of viewers at home who took to Twitter to voice their disgust.

While people at home criticised her, the star later defended herself on Instagram stories, telling her 1.2 million followers that her words had been misinterpreted.

Just to clear things up, Lacey asked me what the storyline was, as we couldn’t hear,’ she began.

‘I answered with, I’m not actually sure, “I think they all self-harmed on that show”. I didn’t watch the show, I only went from the clip I saw previous, which involved three girls on a bed.

‘I haven’t watched the show recently so don’t actually know, but always love it and wasn’t discrediting. I was literally answering what the storyline was.

‘I know that self-harm isn’t a joke, obviously, and love any soap that tackles hard stories. It’s been taken out of context! Jake Wood’s story involved self-harm too. I wasn’t hating, I was answering a question. Sorry for [the] offence!!’

Yet before she had time to explain, people had already shared how appalled they were with her comments via social media, where she was branded a ‘sore loser’.

Overall, the Channel 4 soap walked away with four awards in total, including Best Male Dramatic Performance (Ross Adams), Best On-screen Partnership (Malique Thompson-Dwyer and Theo Graham), and Best Single Episode for Three Mothers, Three Daughters.

Elsewhere, Corrie won a host of awards, including Best British Soap, with its stars Lucy Fallon and Jack P Shepherd winning both Best Actress and Actor awards.
