England's thrilling World Cup journey came to an emotional end on Wednesday (July 11), but at least we'll get another topical reference on EastEnders.

Following Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) mentioning the national team's wins over Colombia and Sweden, the BBC soap filmed another scene today to be inserted into tonight's episode (hopefully with Mick again!).

England, of course, lost 2-1 to Croatia in the World Cup semi-final after a brutal extra time winner from Mario Mandzukic.

The team have been widely praised by the public and the media for their performance in the tournament, exceeding all expectations, so we're guessing that we'll see Mick stating how proud he is of the players and of Gareth Southgate. Maybe he'll even call for Southgate to be knighted.

Following England's round of 16 victory over Colombia, Mick declared that football was "coming home".

And following the quarter-final Sweden win, he predicted to Shirley (as well as name-checking David Davis' resignation): "I'll tell you what: We get in that final, we'll win it."

Earlier this year, EastEnders filmed a topical reference for the royal baby's birth.

Self-professed royal super-fan Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) beamed: "8lb and 7oz. I mean, that is a very healthy weight, isn't it? If he's got his daddy's smile and his mummy's hair, he's going to be perfect.

"Makes me want to cry. Diana, a grandma again. All that joy she's missing out on!"

Her mother-in-law Shirley wasn't quite as interested, grumbling: "Linda, why are you even talking to me about it? I don't care."
