John Altman – better known as EastEnders' Nasty Nick around these parts – reckons he might have a future in the world of politics.

"Someone is interested in putting me forward as an MP. So we shall see. Watch this space," he reportedly told The Daily Star.

It's a mixed bag of policies that the 64-year-old EastEnders actor is putting together.

Top of his list is scrapping student loans, calling Tony Blair's decision to introduce them a "disgrace", then he says he would turn his attention to slashing the defence budget to further his uni-fee ideals.

"I would put the money that they put into billion-pound missiles back into education. We do need defence but I'd have less of it and make sure that students got grants.

"Having that debt is not a good start in life and it's not going to encourage new talent from across the board to emerge and keep our country great. It's counter-productive."

Meanwhile also top of his nascent manifesto is ridding our nation's roads of potholes, citing the tragic case of a man who died after hitting one in the road.

"It was reported many times. This poor family man went down the hole and died," he added.

"His head hit the ground and that was the end of him. The next Monday morning the council sent a truck to fill the hole in. Things like that make me mad."

John does freely admit that he doesn't know what party he would align himself to, were he to seriously go down the ministerial route.

"It has to be discussed and I need to know the particular party's outlook on the world and the manifesto," he explained.

Well, you have our vote John.

Nasty Nick was written out of EastEnders in 2015 after nearly 30 years on the soap when mum Dot Cotton (June Brown) gave him a lethal dose of heroin after she grew sick of his bad behaviour.

Luckily June and John are on slightly better terms, and John even turned up in BBC's celebratory tribute for June's 90th birthday.

EastEnders airs on BBC One.
