EastEnders was widely praised over the festive period for the dramatic storyline surrounding Max Branning and his daughters, Abi and Lauren.
Fans and critics alike took to social media to celebrate the fact that the BBC One soap was “back to its best” following a difficult few months, with new executive producer John Yorke credited for the turnaround.
However, things have taken a turn over the New Year, with the heist storyline surrounding mysterious newcomer Aidan being slammed as “ridiculous” and “cringe-worthy”, with dozens of viewers taking to Twitter to admit that they had no idea what was going on following last night’s hour-long episode.
Following on from the botched heist, which saw Mick Carter get shot on Monday night [1 January], Aidan’s no-nonsense ex, Ciara, showed up – with it being revealed that it was her who Aidan was trying to rob.
The blonde beauty effortlessly shooed away the police who were swarming the square following the attack, with it currently being unknown how or why she has so much power over the authorities.
Meanwhile, Aidan also pulled a gun on Vincent Hubbard, blaming him for the death of his brother, with Vincent only being saved when Phil Mitchell happened to intervene.
There also appears to be a lot of confusion about how and when the men involved in the heist will get paid, with Aidan’s mysterious ways seemingly irritating viewers rather than intriguing them.
Taking to Twitter, viewers complained about the episode, writing:
This entire gangsta storyline has been one ridiculous farce. Is it supposed to be a comedy #Eastenders

I'm really disappointed with #Eastenders at the moment I don't know which was more stupid the robbery or the Willmott Brown fiasco
