EastEnders is reportedly planning to bring back classic duo Lofty and Mary the Punk after 30 years off-screen.

The long-running BBC soap is said to be eyeing up the idea of welcoming back the old favourites for a big storyline next year, which will result in a fatal end for one of the original cast.

According to reports, Tom Watt and Linda Davidson will reprise their roles, with filming expected to commence in the coming days.

A source told The Sun: “Lofty and Mary the Punk are two of the most memorable characters of the original set of stars.

“It’s staggering to think it’s been more than 30 years since they were last on the Square but soap fans will be delighted to hear of their comeback.”

The insider added that the pair will head back to Albert Square after the death of Dr Legg in February 2019.

EastEnders declined to comment when contacted by Standard Online.

Davidson’s character, who was last seen in 1988, was something of a revolutionary in Walford thanks to her wildchild attitude and controversial storylines.

Lofty, played by Watt, left the soap the same year having married Michelle Fowler, who had given birth to Vicki.

The duo will be the third of the original cast to return to the soap in recent months, following Leonard Fenton reprising his role as Dr Legg for a few months before being killed off.

EastEnders airs Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
