Lucy Benjamin, famed for her portrayal of Lisa Fowler on EastEnders, has candidly discussed the conclusion of her 17-year marriage to Richard Taggart. The couple exchanged vows in 2006 at the picturesque Babington House in Somerset after a whirlwind romance that began on a flight to Dubai, leading to an engagement within three months.

But the 53 year old actress disclosed that she and her former partner had been separated for "quite a long time" before officially deciding to go their separate ways in January 2023. Despite the end of their marriage, Lucy and Richard have maintained an amicable relationship, prioritising the co-parenting of their two daughters. She emphasised that they will "always have a connection" through their children.

Reflecting on the future, Lucy is concentrating on the happiness and security of her children as they navigate the changes brought about by the separation. She also mentioned the privacy they've managed to maintain: "I haven't really spoken about it."

"It was weird the way it just came out as it was quite a long time after we'd actually separated," Lucy told OK Magazine. "But people didn't really pressure us and there was no big shebang about it. We were kind of left alone, which was lovely.", reports the Mirror.

She also shared how her work has provided comfort during this challenging period, describing it as her "comfort". Her own parents split up and at the time, Lucy threw herself into work even as a child. She admitted work has been "a lifeline when times are tough" for her. Lucy "loves nothing more" than her acting career and confessed she "wouldn't know how to do anything else" so is thankful for all the opportunities she has been given.

Despite the end of her marriage, Lucy remains optimistic, saying "life goes on" and highlighting her and Richard's shared approach to parenting. She continued: "Hopefully, we'll never change; we will always be their mum and dad."

Recalling their initial encounter, Lucy reminisced: "He was sat next to me and while I was reading a book, he tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'This must be strange for you because I know a lot about you and you don't know anything about me, but my name's Richard and I'm going to Dubai'."

She found his approach amusing and from there, conversation flowed effortlessly. "Fortunately, I found it very funny and we didn't stop chatting. We were engaged within six weeks - and married within nine months." Their wedding plans progressed swiftly, partly due to Lucy's pregnancy she was seven weeks along when they got married.

The public first learned of her pregnancy during an episode of The X Factor: Battle of the Stars in 2006, when Sharon Osbourne made the announcement. The revelation came as a surprise on the show, with host Kate Thornton immediately questioning Lucy: "I don't think you wanted that announced tonight, did you? " In the following six months, Lucy gave birth to their first daughter, Bessie Jo, and four years later, she publicly shared news of her second pregnancy before welcoming Rosie in April 2011.
