Ross Kemp has spoken about his recent catch-up with former EastEnders co-star Dame Barbara Windsor.

The Peggy Mitchell icon was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2014, and shared the news publicly as she retired from acting four years later.

Dialling in for a video chat on Good Morning Britain today (October 22), Kemp – who played Windsor's on-screen son Grant – told fans: "I spoke to her on Sunday on FaceTime with her husband Scott.

"She recognised me, but we have to be realistic that there is no cure for Alzheimer's. It's probably not going to get much better for her."

Meanwhile, it was confirmed back in August that the legendary actress had been moved to a care home.

Her husband Scott said at the time: "I have been used to hustle and bustle in this little space, then suddenly, silence. All you can hear are your thoughts, and that's not always healthy."

He explained: "It's always been my biggest fear, that one day I would have to take her somewhere and she'd be thinking, 'Why would he do this to me?' That fear has become a reality. It's something I never wanted.

"She still seems unsettled and, in her lucid moments, I can see she's worked out this isn't temporary. She's still thinking and saying I've let her down. Of course that's a painful thing to hear, but I know it's not the Barbara I know speaking."
