EastEnders star Tony Clay speaks out on Callum's new story

EastEnders star Tony Clay has spoken about Callum Highway's new story. In scenes that will air next week, Callum is offered a promotion to Trainee Detective Constable, but his new job gets off to a rocky start as his colleagues give him a nickname.

Clay, who has played Callum since 2018, spoke about his character's development and how he fares with the added responsibility.

"There's lots going on for Callum, in both professional and personal terms. He gets promoted to Trainee Detective Constable," he began. "He's delighted. He's really happy. He feels like his hard work is paying off.

"As with anything in EastEnders, it's not smooth-sailing. I think Callum feels like it's going to be and whatever is thrown at him, he wants to be able to keep his head down because he's determined that he's not going to mess this opportunity up this time.

"So he goes into it wanting to keep his head down to do the job properly, and be the best detective he can be but there's going to be room for scandal as always."

One of Callum's first tasks involves trawling through CCTV footage of Ravi, and Clay revealed that the investigation could potentially create a rift with Jack.

"Within days of him being there, there's already stuff that he's quite heavily involved in with Ravi and Jack, so there's all sorts going on," he teased.

"Something is brought to his attention that might cause a rift between him and his friend Jack, but you'll have to wait and see what happens."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
