EastEnders' Steven Beale was left fearing he had committed murder in tonight's episode (August 17) after he followed through with Max Branning's demands.

Max (Jake Wood) has been in the know over Steven's brain tumour lies for the last few weeks and has recently spotted an opportunity to use the situation to his advantage.

Fully aware of the major leverage he has on Steven, Max upped his twisted schemes by manipulating him into starting a fire at a property in order to get rid of some troublesome tenants.

Steven was initially horrified by Max's arson plan and even contemplated coming clean to Lauren instead, but was backed into a corner when he realised she wouldn't be returning home as planned.

With Max threatening to tell Lauren everything, Steven was left believing that he had no other choice and reluctantly headed over to the flat in Ian's car.

However, when he later returned to the Square, it quickly became apparent that Steven had let the situation get drastically out of hand – with potentially very severe consequences.

As a devastated Steven admitted that he wasn't sure if the tenants had got out of the flat alive, Max insisted that none of this could be traced back to him as he had been in The Vic all night and had numerous witnesses.

As Max walked away, a panic-stricken Steven was left to contemplate his actions – has he just committed arson and murder? And could he be facing a prison sentence as a result?

EastEnders recently confirmed that Aaron Sidwell would be bowing out of his role as Steven, but fans will have to wait and see whether tonight's twist could lead to his downfall.

EastEnders continues on Friday, August 18 at 8pm on BBC One.
